Fare Capping Status

Metro and Santa Clarita Transit have adopted a fare structure that allows you to earn FREE rides!

The next time you tap your TAP card and pay with Stored Value, your ride will count toward a 1-Day and 7-Day cap. Once you reach your 1-Day fare cap, you ride FREE for the day. Reach your 7-Day fare cap and ride FREE for the remainder of the 7-Day period.

Why Can’t I Add 20 Free Rides?

You have already added your LIFE benefit to this card for this month. You may add a LIFE 20-Ride pass beginning the first day of next month.

Pass Status

Pending - A pass that you recently bought may display as pending. It is available to use and will be activated the next time you tap your card.
Activated - A pass that you have begun using displays as activated.
In Queue - A pass that has been added to your TAP card and is available to use but is not yet activated.
Expiration Date - For time-based passes, the pass's expiration date displays in parentheses. The pass actually expires when system service stops at 3AM the day following the expiration date.
Rides Remain - Ride-based passes display the number of unused rides. These passes do not expire.

About Your LIFE Benefits

Each month, LIFE riders have the option to load 20 Free regional rides (valid for travel on 15 transit agencies) OR a discount pass from a specific TAP transit agencies. These agencies include Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA), Culver City Bus, Foothill Transit, Glendale Beeline, GTrans, LADOT, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit, Santa Clarita Transit, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, and Torrance Transit.

Automatically Add 20 Free Rides Each Month

You can choose to automatically add 20 free rides as your LIFE benefit each month. Simply log in to your TAP account and view your TAP card that is registered with the LIFE program. The (calendar) icon indicates 20 free rides can be added on the first day of each month. Change the setting to automatically add the benefit. Please be aware that if you don’t use your TAP card for 90 days, the automatic feature is discontinued and you must manually add your benefit on or after the first day of each month.

Reminder About Metro’s Fare Capping

LIFE riders who travel on Metro must use all 20 rides before they can take advantage of fare capping. Once all 20 rides have been used, use Stored Value to pay per ride until you reach the 1-day or 7-day cap. When you reach the 1-Day or 7-Day cap, you ride FREE!
