Contactless Payment

All you need to ride is a credit or debit card.

Now, customers paying regular fare* can use a contactless credit or debit card to tap and pay on transit on Metro and 26 additional transit agencies for a new quick and easy option to travel around LA County.

How it Works

  • Choose the type of contactless card you want to pay with
    • Plastic credit/debit card
    • Digital credit/debit card in your Apple Wallet, Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet on your smartphone or smartwatch
  • Tap your card at a validator on a bus or train just like a regular TAP card, and the correct fare will be charged to your account
  • Wait for the green screen to appear or the “beep” and “GO” message to board with valid fare
  • All major credit/debit cards are accepted: American Express, Visa, Mastercard and Discover
    • JCB and Union Pay are also accepted for international cards

Benefits

Paying with a contactless credit/debit card brings you the same benefits as a regular fare TAP card, including:

  • 2 hours of free transfers on Metro
  • Discounted inter-agency transfers between TAP participating agencies
  • Participate in fare capping on Metro and Santa Clarita Transit to earn free rides
  • Metro and Santa Clarita riders can still participate in fare capping to earn free rides.

Group Payment (Credit/Debit Card Only)

Now you can pay for yourself and up to 4 additional riders with your credit/debit card.

  • Convenient for groups traveling together for a quicker, easier way to pay fare
  • How it works
    • On bus, tap the credit/debit card on the validator for each rider in the group
    • On rail, tap for each rider through the gate
      • All taps for groups traveling together must happen within 2 minute
  • All riders in the group can use that same credit/debit card (in the same payment form) to transfer on Metro or between agencies and tap-to-exit
  • Only the first tap will count toward the fare cap.
  • Group payment is best for groups traveling together for their entire journey.  If members of the group separate from the cardholder who paid their fare, those riders will be responsible for paying a new fare when they board a new bus or train. NOTE: Upon a fare inspection, if a rider cannot show proof of paid fare, they may be subject to a citation.

*TAP cards and cash are still accepted on bus and rail.

**Reduced Fare customers will be able to pay their fare at the discounted rate with a contactless credit/debit card in 2027.
