Norwalk Transit System (NTS) Overview

Established in 1974 as a small inter-community circular, Norwalk Transit System (NTS) was originally known as the “Hustle Bus” to local residents, which consisted of a fleet of 12 buses on three (3) routes. Currently, NTS has a fleet of 34 buses and operates six (6) fixed routes that provide a reliable source of public transportation for patrons to jobs, schools, recreation, essential services and other facilities.

NTS provides fixed-route service to the City of Norwalk and surrounding communities of Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, El Monte, La Mirada, La Habra, Santa Fe Springs, South El Monte, Whittier, and the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Additionally, NTS provides direct interconnectivity between the Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs Metrolink Station and LA Metro C Line Station (formerly known as the Green Line).

NTS offers residents of Norwalk the benefit to enroll in a Dial-A-Ride (DAR) program that has two (2) components to serve residents who are either 60 years of age and older, or who are physically disabled regardless of age.

The first component is a public demand-responsive service that provides curb-to-curb trips within the city limits for a $1.00 fare per trip. The second component is a Paratransit User Side Subsidy Transportation Program, which provides inter-jurisdictional trips to approved medical and dental facilities in the Cities of Bellflower, Downey, Lakewood and Whittier by use of a TaxiCard®, with 50 one-way rides loaded on the card per month with a $1.00 co-pay per one-way trip and any remaining trip balance exceeding $16.00 value.

NTS’s fleet includes four (4) Battery Electric Buses (BEB’s). NTS in collaboration with California Transit Training Consortium (CTTC) is providing hands-on BEB familiarization technical training opportunities for its mechanics and other agency mechanics in the regions for the improvement of the transit workforce. NTS will continue to work with CTTC to identify new training needs as the transit technologies training requirements continue to grow and expand.
